The Wellness Inventory may be licensed by hospitals and healthcare organizations to promote wellness in the community, to use as a marketing tool to increase patient outreach and patient retention, to gather valuable demographic data to aid in creating wellness and health education programs targeted to community needs, and to utilize as a cornerstone of the employee wellness program.

Teaching Patients to Be Well
According to Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, the primary role of the physician is as educator. However, in the fast-paced 21st century, our health care system rarely provides physicians with time and expertise to devote to educating their patients in living a healthy lifestyle.

Thirty years ago a young intern at Johns Hopkins had a flash of inspiration that would come to have a major impact on this problem. Dr. John W. Travis realized he wanted to dedicate his life not to treating patients, but teaching people to be well. He subsequently helped to pioneer the modern wellness movement, opening the first wellness center in America in 1975, and creating the first wellness assessment—the Wellness Inventory.

Wellness Inventory is a "whole person" assessment program designed to help patients gain personal insight into their state of physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. The program offers guidance and tools to transform this new awareness into lasting changes in their lives, and a renewed sense of health and wellbeing. And best of all, the program can be taken in the comfort of the patient's own home and you will have access to their scores (with their permission).

Background of the Program - Teaching People to Be Well
The Wellness Inventory is based on the pioneering work of John W. Travis, MD, MPH, recognized as a founder of the wellness movement. Dr. Travis was a protégé of Dr. Louis Robbins, creator of the Health Risk Appraisal, while a resident at John's Hopkins and working with the US Public Health Service. In the early 1970s influenced by the pioneering work of Abraham Maslow and his concept of self-actualization, and other early leaders in the human potential movement, he decided to dedicate his life to "teaching people to be well" rather than treating patients.

He opened the first wellness center in the US in 1975) and created the first wellness assessment (Wellness Inventory) as the intake for the center. The work at his wellness center was based on a forerunner of the coaching model, in which the client was the expert in his/her own life and had a co-creative relationship with the center's wellness facilitators. Dr. Travis authored the classic Wellness Workbook (Celestial Arts, 1981, 2004, 3rd Ed) which has been used by wellness and health promotion educators in universities for 25 years.
